Lisa Han - Visualizing and Mapping Exercise

Page history last edited by Lisa Han 9 years, 5 months ago

For this exercise I created a storymap of all the clones in the show "Orphan Black." I chose "Orphan Black" for this exercise because it is already a series that is very tied up in global aspirations—it's trans-everything: transmedia, transnational, even transgender (there's a clone named Tony). On the macro level, it's Canadian show that premiered on BBC America. But according to Google Trends, it also has a huge following in Kenya, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the US, the UK, and Singapore:

But to get back to the show itself, basically it's about these clones who discover each other over the course of the two seasons after they are adults and they have been scattered across the world. I used storymap to visualize the clone diaspora in the order of their discovery. The map is heavily skewed towards Canada, the US, and the UK which I think is interesting to look at in contrast to the actual fan bases for the show:

Also just a tangent—I'm definitely not the only one who obsesses over visualizing Orphan Black. I found this awesome fan-made network visualization of the Orphan Black clones that also does a good job of demonstrating just how complex this show is:
